About Nkonya Spelling and Pronunciation
The following letters are the same as in Akan (Twi) – É›, Å‹, É”. É© is used in some places that Twi would use e. For example, É©bÉ©, 'hand'. If we used Twi spelling this would be spelled ebe. In the pronunciation section of the dictionary entries we've used a small upper case 'I' – ɪ Ê‹ is used differently from the way that it's used in Ewe. In Nkonya, it is a vowel that is used in some places that Twi would use o. For example, É©bÊ‹ 'mountain'. In the pronunciation section of the dictionary entries we've used a character that resembles a 'U' – ÊŠ; e and o are used in other places. For example, igye 'yesterday' and igyo 'yam'. An acute accent is used to mark high tone. The is only used where it's needed to give meaning. For example, afu "lumps" and afú "wind". High tone is used to indicate future tense. For example, compare:
Igye, nɔyɔ ndɔtɔ "Yesterday I went to farm"
with
ƆkÉ›, nÉ”́yÉ” ndÉ”tÉ” "Tomorrow, I will go to farm."The dictionary has a pronunciation section for each entry. It marks the tone and has some other information that's useful to scholars. Some notes on what's in the pronunciation is here
